Joining the Current Network

Thank you for your interest in Current. The easiest and quickest way for you to get involved is to register yourself and your computer on the Current network.

Why do I need to register?

IT equipment is responsible for around a third of all the electricity consumed on campus. Through Current, we would like to help reduce this consumption. There are two ways that you can help us with this. Firstly, we would like to monitor when your PC is on, off or idle so that we can get a more accurate picture of how energy is used across campus. Secondly, we’d like you to try out some tools that we’ve developed to help you manage energy on your PC more effectively. Please read the information sheet to find out more about how this process works.

Please read the information sheet to find out about how the monitoring programme will work.

Who can register for the Current network?

Whilst anyone can register to receive information and updates from the project, you can only register your computer for our network if you are staff or a postgraduate student at Lancaster and you work on a PC that runs Windows. We can’t take Mac or Linux users yet – sorry

What do I need to do?

To register, make sure you have read our information sheet, then simply fill in your details on our consent form.

What happens after I sign up?

Once you sign up, you'll get a response confirming that your registration has been successful. We'll then be in contact in the near future to let you know when the monitoring has started.

What else can I do right now?

Once you've registered, there are two key ways in which you can support us further.

I'm not a Lancaster University staff member or postgraduate – can I still join?

Of course. You won't be able to take part in the study itself but you can still register to receive project updates. Don't forget that you can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter too.
